After decades of tuning its production lines, the paper industry has now reached the stage where any additional increase in production efficiency requires major investment. As a result, the potential of finishing and dispatching operations are starting to be recognised as a means of achieving even greater cost-efficiency. The first steps were taken a long time ago with the introduction of automated vehicle loading and of individual automated storage areas. This means that the core technology already exists and it is now merely a question of finding the right combination. When taking the development further, it is important to remember simply automating existing operations without making any changes is hardly ever the answer: the whole chain of logistics must be streamlined and the handling, storage and transport methods re-evaluated. Optimising the whole chain A typical feature of the paper industry is that order sizes can vary as much as the dimensions of the storage spaces between transporting units. This presents a challenge when defining the most appropriate system. In fact, it takes input from all the partners in the transport chain to create a system that benefits each partner directly or indirectly. By optimising the whole chain, the customer gains added value in the long term. Further information: Mrs. Sanna Rintatalo firstname.lastname@pesmel.com Tel. +358 6 234 1357
