For the past ten years, Pesmel has been doing pioneering work on the development and automation of the finishing end of the production chain in steel mills. Product development arising from customer needs has already resulted in several competitive products e.g. the through-the-eye wrapping system with automated film roll changing, a body-wrapping technique for coils and a packaging system for sheet bundles. In addition, many smaller devices and modifications have been developed for various stages of the system. Handling equipment used for metal industry products requires strength and durability. In Pesmel systems, product weight and dimensions are not limiting factors. For example, product weight can vary from a thousand kilos to 35 tons. When delivering customer-tailored systems, flexible solutions are an important issue. With Pesmel packaging systems several different packaging films can be used to wrap the same product at the same wrapping station. In addition to packaging films, different kinds of extra protection, e.g. board headers, corner protection, lids, ground timbers and pallets, can also be applied automatically to the product, if required. Common to all development projects at Pesmel is the desire to design and manufacture automated systems for heavy duty and high capacity operations. Despite high capacities, the life cycle of the Pesmel devices is from 20 to 30 years. Automation is the key for industry today, whenever operations are rationalized. Other factors influencing product development include specific customer needs, such as product protection and appearance, eliminating heavy and difficult work sequences, and increasing capacity. ”During the last ten years, our systems have been delivered to a number of globally known steel mills and our customer list is growing all the time. As well as the steel industry, we also have customers among copper and aluminium producers,” explains Product Manager Veli-Matti Hirsimäki, who has been involved in selling to the steel industry right from the beginning. Pesmel now has significant experience in handling and packaging sheets, coils, strips and wire rods. “Understanding the steel industry’s processes is essential when carrying out product development and system design, if we are to achieve results that are satisfactory to all parties,” observes Hirsimäki. There is still work to be done to automate the metal industry’s processes at the finishing end and the need for new developments arises all the time. “At this very moment we have a couple of new product development projects in hand. We will tell you more about them soon,” reveals Hirsimäki. The key to Pesmel’s activities has always been the will to embrace challenge, which is how we have gained both the experience and professional skills that have enabled to us create new solutions to meet actual needs.
