- Pesmel coil packaging system to the new mill of BlueScope Steel in China
Australian giant steel producer BlueScope Steel will invest to China by building a new state-of-the-art flat steel metallic coating and painting facility to Jiangsu province, Suzhou. Pesmel will deliver a complete packaging line to the facility. The line will be in full working condition by the end of February 2006. The plant itself will be completed in mid CY 2006.
BlueScope Steel is a leading steel producer in Australia and New Zealand. The company produces most of the flat steel products to these markets. BlueScope Steel´s customers are in the building and construction, automotive, packaging and in general manufacturing industries. The present rolling, coating and painting plants are situated in Australia, New Zealand, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia. New facility in China is the biggest investment of the company at the moment and it will employ approximately 300 people.
BlueScope Steel has had operation in the continent of China for over ten years and it has a strong market position there. Along with this new investment the company is able to increase the supply of steel products for example for the growing building and construction markets in China.
This project is a good example of Pesmel´s capability to deliver heavy duty material handling equipment for steel industry. "Competitive and complete wrapping system with control automation and mill interfaces was one essential factor for customer when choosing the supplier", states the Project Manager Markku Marttila from Pesmel.
The wrapping functions of the packaging line are fully automated, which cuts out the manual working phases totally, in the same time increasing the capacity and work safety. The packaging line includes through-the-eye wrapping system with automated film roll changing magazine. The magazine can be loaded with 12 film rolls, which ensures continuous wrapping for approximately eight hours, depending on coil size and the amount of stretch film layers.
As a new innovation, the packaging line includes so called body wrapping function, where an air textured plastic is wrapped to the mantle of the coil on top of the stretch film. This thick plastic layer gives strong extra protection to the mantle. Before wrapping, the system automatically picks the right plastic roll from the six rolls magazine according to the width of the coil.
After wrapping, the end labels and the inner and outer edge protectors are added. As a result, the package is totally waterproof and weather-resistant. Perfect protection enables long distance transportations regardless the weather conditions and extends the durability of steel significantly. Pesmel has years of experience from packaging different products and thus keeping them in top condition during transportation and warehousing. The cost savings reached by proper product packaging can be considerable.
Besides the equipment, Pesmel´s delivery includes project management, test run at our factory, installation supervision and training services at customer´s premises. "We install the systems at our factory in order to perform test runs and to have so called factory-approval for the equipment. By these actions the devices are adjusted, functions optimized and capacities ensured already at our factory, which boosts installation and start-up work at customer´s facilities", states Marttila. Test run was performed also regarding BlueScope Steel project and the customer was pleased with the packaging line and the results of the test run.
