Stora Enso has ordered a fully automated system for packaging paper rolls for delivery to the company’s Berghuizer mill in Holland, as part of company’s rationalization plan. The new Pesmel system brings greater efficiency to the Dutch operation. Stora Enso is a global market leader in the production of magazine and fine paper, packaging board and wood products. The Berghuizer mill, part of the company’s Fine Paper Division in the Paper Product area, has such well-known brand names as Berga, 4CC, Superior / Super Office Color and MultiCopy, which are used for office, envelope, high speed inkjet and printing purposes. The mill’s two paper machines work 24 hours a day producing over 235 000 tons of paper a year. The machines’ output also sets the efficiency and capacity requirements for the product handling and packaging equipment in order to avoid bottlenecks. The capacity of Pesmel’s packaging line is ca. 72 rolls / hour. The Pesmel system delivery for Berghuizer includes the following: - Slat conveyors from the slitter - Fully automated axial roll wrapping with double-ended crank - Fully automated radial roll wrapping - Automated board header insertion by robot - Automated labelling - Automated palletizing - Roller conveyors, which also function as a buffer storage zone This project is a good example of the close and effective co-operation between Pesmel and the customer. Because the Pesmel product range and system design are flexible, it was possible to create the final layout at an early stage in the project, which speeded up production and shortened the delivery time. Prior to delivery, the whole packaging and handling system was erected and tested in Pesmel’s workshops in Kauhajoki. When the system passed the factory approval tests to the standards required by the quality-control system, it was delivered to the customer. Stora Enso and Pesmel are both ISO 9001 standardized companies. The complete line will be in full production during the summer of 2006.
