One of the great challenges for the future is how to handle the flow of cargo at air cargo terminals, while ensuring that it reaches the right destinations and meets tight time schedules. Aircraft are getting larger and, at the same time, the handling of air cargo is becoming more complex. The problem of how to handle the increased numbers of passengers is often easier to solve than that of the flow of freight. The fact is that maximizing the aircraft utilization rate is a "must" for modern air cargo handling centres. Aircraft costing millions cannot be allowed to stand idle at airports waiting for service. The handling of air cargo can often be a bottleneck in the operation of air cargo handling centers. Careless or rough handling can also be costly as it results in losses or damage to the cargo. The question is how to handle cargo quickly and smoothly. Automated operations bring many advantages, as Pesmel has proved in practice over the last 20 years of development. We have a history of supplying automated loading systems for air cargo, trucks, trains and sea cassettes. The basic idea behind all these systems is the same: smooth flow throughout the transportation chain. Automation is a key factor when efficiency improvements must be made or savings achieved. Pesmel Material Flow How is a fast handling system for air cargo. All Pesmel loading systems are built according to the customer´s specific needs and the customer can define the level of automation incorporated in the system. After the aircraft has docked to the Pesmel aircraft docking system and been unloaded, all handling can be done automatically in the terminal. With Pesmel airport docking system no extensive ground handling equipment for loading or unloading is required. All the loading work can be carried out under cover, so that the cargo, personnel and equipment are protected against adverse weather conditions. The controlled loading process is not only fast; it also minimizes the risk of accidents. Our solutions can also include an information system, which assists container location and identification to ensure correct delivery and also provides real-time documentation and data transmission. Pesmel Material Flow How incorporates both the system and its support services. The system includes all necessary in-terminal equipment such as High Bay Storage Systems, Complete ETV-systems including Storage Bins, Build-Up/Break-Down Stations, Transfer Cars, Elevating Transfer Vehicles, Transfer Lanes, Turning Units, Truck Dock Units, Scales. Pesmel Oy is a Finnish company, which has carried out a number of projects at air cargo terminals where the deliveries consisted of equipment for the handling and storage of airline containers and pallets. We have served our home market within Scandinavia and our customers over the past years have included airlines such as Finnair Cargo, SAS Cargo and Falcon Air. One of our projects is for the supply of equipment to the cargo terminal in Chennai (Madras), India, for the Airport Authority of India (AAI). Future changes and developments will present a great challenge for air cargo handlers. But, if the handling chain makes the right use of modern technology, it is possible to avoid bottlenecks and improve efficiency at the critical stages, such as plane loading and unloading functions. In the future, handling will depend on the efficiency and accuracy of automation. Further information: Mrs. Sanna Rintatalo firstname.lastname@pesmel.com Tel. +358 6 234 1357
