Innovative thinking by Pesmel has developed its "through-the-eye" wrapping system to enhance the presentation and protection for steel coils, with brand new unique features patented in 2004. "Through-the-eye" wrapping is the most progressive method on the market, believes mechanical designer Teemu Kiili, who has worked in the development team. He said: "We have combined an extremely high degree of automation with very robust construction that together make this machine more than capable of coping with the demanding environment presented by the steel industry. It is a major step forward in automation." Weight does not set limits In Through-the-Eye wrapping with narrow film, the minimum inner diameter of the steel coil is ca. 400 mm. The length of the coil can be 1650 mm and the outer diameter 2200 mm. It is also possible to handle bigger coils by changing the structure of the machine. None of the other coil dimensions nor its weight impose any limitations on the system. "The weight of the coils in the systems we have supplied so far has varied from a thousand kilos to 35 tons, which illustrates perfectly that the weight of the coil isn´t restrictive factor", said Kiili. It takes between four and five minutes to wrap a coil, sealing it in a near-waterproof package which leaves the inside unobstructed to allow wrapped coils to be handled without damage. Corus increases the capacity with new packaging system Pesmel has supplied the Scunthorpe Rod Mill, operated in the UK by Corus, with an automated packaging system for its products. This is in addition to an earlier semi-automated wrapping machine, and incorporates additional features to enhance the plant´s quality of packaging and wrapping capacity. The Pesmel packaging system is an integral part of a newly-commissioned coil warehouse, and will increase not only the coil handling quality and capacity, but also the presentation of the product, which is important to Corus and its clients. A key feature behind the Corus choice of the Pesmel system was its ability to wrap with a variety of different films, with up to three on the same coil. Changing from one film type to another is completely automatic, with operator involvement only to ensure the film magazines remain loaded. Coils can be wrapped with VCI rust protection film, over which a polyweave textured film can be added. Packaging can be completed with a tightly stretched film layer applied by a radial wrapping machine integrated in the system.
